What Is Leet Speak? The 1337 Alphabet, Examples and History

Updated · 6 min read · By the Hacker Typer team

Leet speak, written 1337 or l33t, is a way of writing where letters are swapped for numbers and symbols that look similar. "Hacker" becomes "h4ck3r", "elite" becomes "31337". It started as an in-group code on early online systems and is now mostly used for fun, usernames and jokes.

What does "leet" mean?

"Leet" is short for elite. On the dial-up bulletin board systems (BBSes) of the 1980s, "elite" described users with special status or access to restricted areas. Writing the word as "leet", then "l33t", then "1337" was a way to show you belonged. The number 1337 is simply the word "leet" spelled with digits: 1 for L, 3 for E, 7 for T.

The leet speak alphabet

There is no official alphabet. Leet has levels, from light substitutions that anyone can read to heavy ones that take effort to decode. These are the most widely used forms.

Basic leet usually changes only the vowels and a few consonants: A, E, I, O, S and T. That keeps words readable, which is why it is the form you see in usernames.

Leet words that entered everyday slang

Leet is more than letter swaps. It produced its own vocabulary, and some of it escaped into general internet use.

Why was leet speak invented?

Three reasons come up in most accounts of its history:

  1. Getting past filters. Early message boards blocked certain words and system operators searched for them. Text filters matched exact spellings, so "h4ck" passed where "hack" did not.
  2. Signalling membership. Being able to read and write it showed you were part of the scene.
  3. Play. Keyboards offered symbols, and people enjoyed finding shapes in them.

Through the 1990s and 2000s it spread into online gaming, where "pwned" and "n00b" became universal. Today serious use has almost disappeared and it survives mainly as humour and nostalgia.

Is leet speak good for passwords?

No. Turning "password" into "p455w0rd" feels clever, but these substitutions are so well known that password-cracking tools try them automatically. A long passphrase of several unrelated words, or a random password from a password manager, is far stronger than any leet version of a dictionary word.

How to write leet speak

  1. Start with the six basic swaps: A→4, E→3, I→1, O→0, S→5, T→7.
  2. For a stronger look, add B→8 and G→9.
  3. For hard leet, build letters from symbols, such as |\| for N and \/\/ for W.
  4. Or paste your text into the generator and copy the result.
