How to read the result

Leave the page open for a few seconds; the number settles after the first moment. Keep the tab in the foreground, because browsers slow down hidden tabs.

Why does it show less than my monitor's rating?

  1. The setting is lower. Many monitors ship set to 60 Hz. On Windows, open Settings, then System, Display, Advanced display, and choose the highest refresh rate.
  2. The cable or port. Older HDMI cables and ports may not carry high refresh rates. DisplayPort is usually the safer choice for 144 Hz and above.
  3. Battery saving. Laptops and phones often lower the refresh rate on battery. Plug in and check again.
  4. Several screens. The browser follows the screen its window is on. Drag the window to the screen you want to test.

Step-by-step instructions for each system are in how to check your monitor's refresh rate. Checking the panel for faults? Use the dead pixel test.

Refresh rate test FAQ

How do I check my monitor's refresh rate?

Open this page and wait a few seconds. The large number shows the refresh rate in Hz as measured by your browser.

Is the browser result accurate?

It is accurate when the browser runs at full speed, which is the normal case. Battery saving, a hidden tab or a heavily loaded computer can make it read lower.

What does frame time mean?

The time between two frames in milliseconds. 60 Hz is about 16.7 ms, 144 Hz about 6.9 ms and 240 Hz about 4.2 ms.
