Double Click Test

Is your mouse clicking twice when you press once? Click normally in the box below. The test measures the time between clicks and flags presses that arrive too quickly to be human, which is the sign of a worn switch.

How to use it

  1. Click single clicks in the box at a normal pace, 20 or 30 times, with the button you suspect.
  2. Watch the Too fast column. A healthy mouse stays at 0 when you single click.
  3. If it goes up, the switch is sending two clicks for one press: a hardware fault called "chatter".

The Double clicks row counts double clicks as your computer sees them. Try a deliberate double click to check that it registers, then go back to single clicks.

Why does a mouse double click by itself?

Inside each mouse button is a small switch with metal contacts. As it wears, the contacts can bounce and register two clicks within a few milliseconds. People normally cannot click twice in under about 80 ms, so clicks that close together almost always come from the switch. Dust and some driver settings can cause it too. Fixes, from easiest to hardest, are in how to fix a mouse that double clicks.

Double click test FAQ

How do I know if my mouse is double clicking?

Single click in the test box. If clicks appear in the Too fast column, the mouse is sending two clicks for some presses.

What threshold should I use?

80 ms is a good default. Use 50 ms to catch only clear faults, or 100 ms if you click very deliberately and want a stricter test.

Does it test the right and middle buttons?

Yes. Every button is counted separately, and the right-click menu is blocked inside the box.
