What you can change

What is matrix rain?

Matrix rain, also called digital rain, is the visual from the 1999 film The Matrix: columns of glowing green characters falling down a black screen. In the film it represents the raw code of the simulated world. It has since become the standard shorthand for "computers" and "hacking" in pictures, videos and wallpapers.

The effect is simple to describe. The screen is divided into columns. In each column a bright character moves down one row at a time, and the characters it leaves behind fade out. Each column restarts at a random moment, which is why the rain looks uneven and natural. We explain the origin of the symbols in Matrix digital rain explained, and show how to code it yourself in Matrix raining code effect using JavaScript.
