How to Fix a Mouse That Double Clicks When You Click Once
Files open when you only meant to select them, drag-and-drop lets go mid-move, and single clicks register twice. That's a mouse that double clicks on its own. It's very common, and usually caused by a worn switch.

Step 1: confirm the problem
Open the double click test and single click 20 to 30 times at a normal pace. If clicks land in the Too fast column, the mouse is sending extra clicks. Nobody can click twice in under about 80 ms on purpose, so these come from the hardware.
Step 2: rule out settings
- Windows double-click speed: open Control Panel, Mouse, and the Buttons tab. If the double-click speed is set very slow, two normal clicks may be read as a double click. Set it near the middle and test again.
- Single-click to open: in File Explorer's folder options, "Single-click to open an item" makes every click open files. Switch it back to double-click if it was turned on by accident.
- Mouse software: gaming mice often have software with macros or button remapping. Check nothing is assigned to the main buttons.
Step 3: try another port and computer
Plug the mouse into a different USB port, and if possible try it on another computer. If the fault follows the mouse, it is the mouse. If not, it is a setting or driver on that computer.
Step 4: clean it
Dust and grime under the button can cause erratic clicks. With the mouse unplugged, blow compressed air around the edges of the buttons and click several times while doing it. This sometimes helps, at least for a while.
Step 5: debounce software
Some mouse makers' software includes a "debounce" or click-delay setting that ignores a second click arriving too soon after the first. Third-party tools exist for this too. It hides the symptom rather than fixing the switch, but it can make a mouse usable again.
Step 6: warranty or a new switch
The root cause is usually the small switch under the button. Its metal contacts wear and bounce, sending two signals for one press. If the mouse is under warranty, claim it, because this is a known failure. If you are comfortable with a soldering iron, replacement switches are cheap and the repair is a common hobby project. Otherwise a new mouse is the simplest answer.
FAQ
Why does my mouse double click by itself?
Usually because the switch under the button is worn and its contacts bounce, registering two clicks for one press. Settings and dirt can cause it too.
Can a double clicking mouse be fixed without opening it?
Sometimes. Cleaning with compressed air or using debounce software can help. A worn switch can only be truly fixed by replacing it.
How do I test my mouse for double clicking?
Use an online double click test and single click repeatedly. Clicks arriving less than about 80 ms apart point to a fault.
