How to Press the Spacebar Faster

Updated · 4 min read · By

Spacebar speed tests are a quick, addictive challenge. Most people press 5 to 7 times a second; with the right technique you can push well past that. Here is what actually makes a difference.

Spacebar counter result of 9.4 presses per second with tips to go faster
Test yourself: the spacebar counter measures presses per second and saves your best score.

1. Use the right finger (or two)

2. Press near the middle

Spacebars are long, and the stabilisers at each end make them feel heavier near the edges. Press close to the middle, where the key moves most evenly.

3. Small, light presses

You don't need to push the key all the way down. Short, light taps that only just register are faster than full presses. Keep your wrist relaxed and let the movement come from the fingers.

4. Your keyboard matters

5. Practise in short bursts

Try 5- and 10-second runs rather than long ones; you will improve technique faster. Stop if your fingers, wrist or forearm start to ache. Repetitive strain is real, and no score is worth it.

What is a good spacebar score?

Presses per secondRating
Under 5Relaxed
5 to 7Average
7 to 9Fast
9 to 11Very fast
Over 11Exceptional

These are rough guides rather than official records. Holding the key down never counts, because keyboards repeat held keys automatically.

FAQ

Most people manage about 5 to 7 presses per second in a 10-second test.

On our counter, yes. Only separate presses count, whichever fingers you use.

Does a better keyboard really help?

A little. Light, smooth keys help, but technique makes a much bigger difference.
